Background on South Africa
South Africa is on the southern tip of the African continent, and is a nation of tablelands, coastal plains, and hills, with a warm-dry climate. Despite being one of Africa’s most prosperous regions, there is a great need for assistance for impoverished young victims of sexual violence. South Africa has a wide range of factories, as well as mines for gold, diamonds, uranium, copper, iron and other minerals. Crops include corn, wheat and fruit. Three-fourths of the land’s 41.7 million-person population is black, and the rest are the descendants of white Dutch and British settlers. Segregation or “Apartheid” (“apartness”) was instituted from 1940 and remained in force until 1991. South Africa is 472,000 square miles in size.

Background on Lesotho, Botswana, Mozambique and Swaziland
Lesotho is a small nation with a population of 1.7 million, where half of the adults work in mines, farming or raising livestock. Botswana has a population of 1.2 million, and is hot and dry, especially in the western region of the Kalahari Desert. Mozambique’s population of 15.6 million was hard hit by civil war and drought in the 1980’s. Swaziland is much smaller, with a population of only 768,000.
